First Feature for Peaches Christ
In March, San Francisco-based Backlash Films shot its first feature All About Evil, a campy cult horror film in the vein of those presented by drag queen Peaches Christ, host of the notorious "Midnight Mass" series and the Underground Short Film Festival. The story concerns a shy librarian who inherits her father's decrepit movie house and begins making her own horror shorts - not unlike Peaches Christ's own shorts, which owe as much to John Waters as George A. Romero. Starring Thomas Dekker (Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles) and other contemporary cult actors, the film was written and directed by Joshua Grannell, who has been a venerable force in the San Francisco film scene for more than a decade and appears in the film as his aforementioned drag character Peaches Christ. With a cameo by Fangoria Magazine, veteran cinematographer Tom Richmond behind the camera, and visual effects man Mark Christiansen on board, All About Evil is sure to look great and make a slash. Grant Finalists Announced
The twelve finalists for the first SFFS/KRF Filmmaking Grant of $35,000 were announced early April with possible winners including Jennie Livingston (Paris is Burning), Caveh Zahedi (I Am A Sex Addict) and Amanda Micheli (Double Dare). The San Francisco Film Society will award $3 million for social justice films over the next four years in partnership with the Kenneth Rainin Foudation, a private foundation that funds world-changing work. Awarded every spring and fall, grants run through 2013, with the total increasing with each year. In addition to cash awards for projects at various levels of production, the program will also provide free tuition to SFFS workshops and classes, a residency program, media coverage, discounts on festival passes, and invitations to swanky industry events world-wide. For more information on the grants, or to apply for one yourself, visit the San Francisco Film Society online (http://www.sffs.org) or the Rainin Foundation (http://www.krfoundation.org). (R.
