On May 4, KCSM-TV's Spotlight! Video Competition Awards will honor young local filmmakers.
The big jackpot for the fledgling cineastes is a coveted spot on the weekly cable show Spotlight! Along with showcasing their work to thousands of Bay Area viewers when the series airs in October, the winners will be joined on air by professional filmmakers, including many local luminaries who've been mentioned in these pages. Prizes in eight categories also include Adobe editing software, Gorilla production management software, scholarships to College of San Mateo, and - last but not least for filmmakers - cash.
"The kids are very excited," said KCSM producer Katherine Russell, adding that 81 entries from 31 Bay Area high schools were judged (a 67% rise over last year), reflecting the popularity of filmmaking among Bay Area youth.
"Among young people, video is a very popular tool for expression, and it's more available than ever before because of advanced and economical production technology," says KCSM executive producer Dante Betteo. "Here at KCSM," adds Betteo, "we recognize young talents and encourage them to pursue their career dreams through Spotlight! and its related programs."
