An extract from the story, "The Good Germans":
Across from my area [in a work camp in Germany], on the other side of the hall, there were three young German trainee pilots, in their blue-gray uniforms, also working on parts of airplanes. The young pilot directly across from my workspace started asking my master to send me over so I could retrieve a tool that fell into the cavity of the airplane wing he was working on.
We were not supposed to talk or look at each other, but I saw his eyes, they were blue. His blond hair, showing under the pilot’s cap, looked luxurious, compared to my shaved head. He began asking for my help more and more often. And I began looking forward to going over there. It was exciting.
On the fourth or fifth time I went over, the pilot was very jittery, walking around the wing of the plane, not looking at me, kind of doing a little dance and singing from the side of his mouth, “What a great war, what a wonderful war, my mother burnt, my father burnt, my brother burnt.” I was scared but my heart went out to him. A bond developed between us, without ever exchanging a word or looking directly at each other.
