If You Build It: Inspiring Creativity and Community
Directed by accomplished documentarian Patrick Creadon, “If You Build It” is a delightful film following two young humanitarians, Emily Pilloton and Matthew Miller, as they spend a year in a rural, flood-prone North Carolina community teaching high school students design, modeling, and construction.
The two teachers emphasize creativity, exploration, and making a difference with a series of three consecutive projects throughout a school year which escalate in difficulty. One simple rule is that each project must be useful.
Practicing what they preach, Philloton and Miller make an immeasurable difference in the lives of these students and their community.
In researching “If You Build It” I discovered that this undistributed documentary film has been reviewed by a “Variety” journalist. Glory Be!
My approach to film review is to be short-and-sweet by primarily focusing on the film’s setup and how the film impacts me emotionally—I avoid revealing the plot or outcomes.
I write this because I want to share the “Variety” review with you—with a giant ‘spoiler alert.’
Also, here’s Pilloton’s and Miller’s site. (A bit of spoiler alert here, too.)
In any case, if you find it, see “If You Build It”!
