Who Cares?: A Meta-Documentary
First, from the website: “Who Cares?” is a feature film of 92 minutes and was shot in seven different countries: Brazil, Peru, U.S.A., Canada, Tanzania, Switzerland and Germany. A total of twenty locations in just forty days, with all the difficulties of combining agendas of our interviewees. The film also features several animations in addition to scenes shot in three different languages (English, Portuguese and Spanish). Directed by Mara Mourão, produced by Mamo Filmes and Grifa Filmes.
Now that we’ve got that out of the way, in addition to my brief subtitle above, “Who Cares?” can easily be described as a ‘sampler documentary.’
The film features 15 ‘social entrepreneurs’ or ‘change makers’ – innovators working outside of both the governmental and corporate worlds to make positive differences in the world. Moving images of each presenter’s focus accompany their spoken introductions and thoughts. Rather than presenting one innovator as a time, the film weaves small portions of each of these presentations throughout the film.
In addition to its high production values, the power of “Who Cares?” lies in the import of each of the presenter’s focus – every one of them have made significant contributions to the quality of life in our world. A feature-length documentary could easily be made on each of these change makers and their work – and for all I know some of them have been made.
The meta-message is both implicit and explicit: Each of us can chose to be a change maker – sometimes defying familial and societal expectations along the way.
