Remembering the Artist: Robert De Niro, Sr. Hosted by Robert De Niro, Jr., with music by Philip Glass, Geeta Gandbhir’s and Perri Peltz’s “Remembering the Artist: Robert De Niro, Sr.” is a sweet, touching portrait of the artist and the father-son relationship.
De Niro, Sr. was talented and prolific as an artist, and troubled as a human being. The times—the 1940s through the 1960s—weren’t consistently with him. He understandably struggled with his homosexuality, and with the constantly shifting tastes of the art world.
The film presents De Niro, Sr.’s core professional struggle as his search for recognition. I don’t know what defines recognition. He had successful showings, a strong reputation, and sales. Staying true to his inner impulses, he did not change his style with the times. More significantly, he did not appreciate the styles of the changed times. Like the cliché mentioned in the film, De Niro, Sr. is receiving well-deserved recognition—after his passing.
Dr Niro, Jr. is dedicated to preserving and enhancing his father’s reputation as a fine artist. This film is one of many endeavors toward that end.
“Remembering the Artist” presents many of De Niro, Sr.’s works, and you can see more of them here.
