Gas Land Part II: Fracking Goes Global
Although I did not see Josh Fox’s 2010 HBO documentary, “Gasland”, I most certainly have been introduced to the latest miracle energy disaster, hydraulic fracturing, through news stories and documentary films. “Gasland Part II" follows personal stories introduced in Fox’s first film—including, of course, his own. And he documents the increasing use of extracting natural gas via this method which seems to have been dreamt up by a horror and disaster film writer.
The raw facts of fracking make it a non-starter as far as I can see. But according to ‘Part II’ the plans are well in place to globalize this extraction process, fracking large regions around the world which contain seas of natural gas beneath their grounds.
Fox provides plenty of scientific evidence to show the inevitable destruction and public health crisis to be perpetuated on the lands and people of Earth. Yes, there are anti-fracking forces at work, and some hints that these forces have made a slight difference. But the deeply entrenched power of our fossil fuel industries make significant reform seem impossible.
(And don’t get me started on tar sands from Canada.)
Well, at least we have Josh Fox and HBO doing what they can to get the message across. The next step is to get the message received.
“Gasland Part II” is playing on HBO and HBO2 during the month of July.
