Dangerous Acts Starring the Unstable Elements of Belarus Madeleine Sackler produced, wrote, and directed this introduction to the internationally acclaimed Belarus Free Theater, an acting troupe that presents shows which address social and political issues in their home country of Belarus which has been ruled by ‘the last dictator in Europe’ Alexander Lukashenko for the last 20 years.
Sackler captures underground performances in Belarus which, along with her interview footage, was smuggled out of the country. We also see troupe members in exile in New York and Great Britain.
“Dangerous Acts Starring the Unstable Elements of Belarus” evokes both the nobility and the tragedy of political dissent in an oppressed nation, and gives the impression of this particular form of dissent as a work in progress.
Except for a very quick comment from an interviewee who describes the endarkened political environments of Belarus, the Ukraine, and Russia as of one cloth, there is no additional information about the relationship of these three nations—except that the enforcers in Belarus are called “KGB”. So, it’s off to Wikipedia or such for the interested viewer.
