Breastmilk: The Movie First-time director/producer Dana Ben-Ari has made a unique contribution to the documentary world. Having given birth to two children, Ben-Ari was concerned that despite the thoroughly documented benefits of breast milk, many women do not breastfeed, or struggle to do so.
“Breastmilk: The Movie” follows a handful of women from pregnancy through the first year of life. We learn of the women’s—and fathers’—thoughts and feelings about breastfeeding; we see the women breastfeeding or attempting to do so; and we see them breast pumping. We learn about the storage and sharing of the pumped milk—especially for the women who, for whatever reasons, cannot or do not breastfeed.
Ben-Ari’s approach is comprehensive. She reveals the internal struggles mothers may have, societal attitudes and restrictions, and our negligence in supporting mothers in making the choice to breastfeed and in following through with that choice.
Public health policy is in need of change. “Breastmilk: The Movie” is going to help catalyze more and faster reform.
The film opens theatrically this May, with the first public screening scheduled on May 7, at the IFC Center, in New York, New York. Consult the film’s website for more screenings around the nation.
