Wear a Mask
If you ever thought some veiling could be romantic, welcome to our first nation-wide masked ball.
After months of denial and dithering, experts and authorities have finally come out for wearing masks, even if they are not official N95. Indeed, you can make them from almost any cloth, even brassieres (see illo).
Masks provide some blocking of the water droplets, both what you expel, just by breathing, as well as in a cough, and what you inhale.
Be careful, however, when placing, adjusting or removing your mask to not self-contaminate.
Signs of Covid-19
According to Dr. Siddhartha Mukherajee, who recently appeared in The New Yorker and on a Ken Burns, PBS-special: "The big issue is low oxygen and not to wait too long before seeking treatment."
Here are some warning signs: Your breaths exceed 25 per minute, parts of your fingers or feet feel cold, you can't hold your breath easily for 10 seconds, your pulse rate rises above 80 beats per minute or your temperature is over 103, or over 101 for two days.
Alternative Medical Tips
As soon as your medical doctor says they have no medicine that can help, it's obviously time for alternative medicine.
“In any outbreak, there is a lot you can do to protect yourself," according to Dr. Marcey Shapiro, a respected MD, herbologist and acupuncturist in Berkeley, and author of "Transforming the Nature of Health' (2012).
"Support your immune system! Avoid sugar! Viruses, and apparently especially coronaviruses, thrive on sugars. Ditto for deep-fat fried foods, unhealthy oils and excess alcohol. Eat lots of lacto-fermented foods to support your microbiome, unless these provoke a histamine reaction. Consider taking a good quality probiotic."

“Try not to worry and certainly do not panic. Fear is disempowering and will not help you stay healthy. Instead celebrate what you love and enjoy life. Laughter is fantastic for your immune system.”
“Spend time in sunlight. Connect with the earth. Be outside, barefoot on grass or seated on earth at least 15 minutes a day."
She also recommends that you end your showers with 30 seconds of cold water (albeit not if you are sick); use lypo-spheric Vitamin C, which means it is more ingestible, zinc capsules, Chaga mushrooms or Host Defense, and Vitamins D3 and A. She says avoid Tylenol, acetaminophen, aspirin and ibuprofen.
Other options include: turmeric supplements, garlic, vitamin E, coconut oil, as a mouthwash a few times daily, and Resveratrol.
By gloving your left hand, and using it for all outside chores, you can scratch your nose with the back of your ungloved right hand. photo: D. Blair
Ironically Covid-19 is so nasty for some folks because it triggers a hyper immune response, or "Cytokine Storm," as identified during the related Asian Swine Flu of 2018 and the SARS outbreak (2002–03).
Go Gloved
In most of Asia, the left and right hand are divided by more than mere symbolism: You eat with the latter and poo with the former.
The same system can be adopted for dealing with a contaminated outside world, by wearing a glove on your left hand and using it to do all "outside" chores—open doors, take food off shelves, carry packages. Meanwhile your right remains ungloved and available for your phone and wallet. Keys are another story, see below.
Driving a car is tricky: either remove the glove and stash it on the floor, or divide the driver's area into glove/contaminate on left, steering wheel split in half, and clean on right.

Kill Your Key's Corona
Keys are penetrative openers, made out of metal, on which Covid-19 can live for 72 hours. Since other people use building front door locks, keys are a possible but little-reported transmission point.
Simply dunk in a jar of alcohol near door upon return, and before washing your hands.
Rubber or leather shoes, on the other hand, only supports Corona for 48 hours. So doff your shoes before entering the house and make a little row of used shoes. Once they have been sitting for two days, they are clean and ready to be worn safely.
Green Tea
During the SARS outbreak, green tea was found by one study to reduce mortality markedly. It is also good for other stuff.

Yoga
A yoga position promoting lung health goes like this: stand erect, press palms together while stretching arms above head, bend to side as far as possible, do three times left and right. This exercise squeezes and releases the lung sacks.
Overall
Be safe, strong and supple. The obstacle is the path. Tragedy offsets the trivial, and can help us face and figure out the new.
